View of a hotel lobby with yellow pillows and a car parked out front

A typical B&B-style hotel with a classier touch, this budget hotel is a fab option for anyone who wants to be just a quick tram ride away from the centerpiece of Vienna’s Christmas markets in Rathausplatz.

It’s clean, it’s comfortable, and far enough away from the busy central district that you’ll have a quiet stay. Plus, it’s just a 20-minute tram away from the famous Schönbrunn Palace!

It’s one of the cheapest hotels in Vienna for such a nice vibe, so it’s well worth it!

1.2 H+ Hotel Wien – for quiet solo travelers

It’s a budget hotel, but it’s also a 4-star hotel, and its location is just a 20-minute walk north from Rathausplatz and so many other Vienna attractions.

You can stay in their 10-bed dormitory (with extremely comfortable bunk beds), or you can stay in one of their private rooms.

The dorm has lockable cupboards, beds with added privacy boards, and practical under-bed storage. It’s the perfect place to stay if you’re in Vienna for the Christmas markets!

1.3 Wombat’s City Hostel Naschmarkt – for digital nomads

View of a hotel room with bunk beds and a view

This place is awesome if you’re on a trip to Vienna and want to meet other people.

Wombat has co-working spaces designed for the busy digital nomad, private rooms as well as shared rooms, and a fab breakfast!

This hostel is just a 15 minute walk to the nearest Christmas Market around Karlsplatz Metro Station. It bustles with energy, so it’s perfect for travelers who love a bit of excitement!

PRO TIP: It’s walking distance from the Vienna State Opera and other awesome attractions, so I highly recommend taking advantage of that!

1.4 JO&JOE Vienna – for solo travelers looking for fun

A room with a foosball table and chairs with a stage

This place is swanky, quirky, fun, and has the most AWESOME roof terrace!

Located next to Europaplatz, it’s the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for hotels close to the Christmas markets. Everything you need is right there – plus a game room, bar, fun vibes, and like-minded solo travelers!

NOTE: The area around here is perfectly safe, but it’s quite residential and quiet – just something to bear in mind for solo female travelers! If you need any help, save the hostel’s number in your phone and give them a call 🙂But please don’t let you put this off, I loved this place!!

1.5 Pension Wienderland – for big rooms at a small price

Just 13 minutes on the metro from Rathausplatz, and in the middle of all the other, smaller Vienna Christmas markets, Pension Wienderland is the cutest little place, and perfect for the budgeteer who loves small details!

The rule of thumb is that a “pension” in Austria is like a cute, family-run 2-star hotel in the UK or USA – very basic, but charming and quaint, and perfect if you just need somewhere to lay your head.

Despite being a budget-friendly option, the rooms here are HUGE. So much space to keep all your purchases from the Christmas markets!

The owners of Pension Wienderland are so lovely, they’ll chat to you about anything!

1.6 Best budget apartment: The Garten Studio

Need a place for yourself? I totally get it, having privacy on vacation is a priority for me!

The Garten Studio is a stunning apartment with a big, comfy bed, right in the city center in Josefstadt. The main Vienna Christmas market is just a 5 minute walk away, and the building is super cute, so you’ll feel like you’re really traveling like a local!

This place has a small kitchenette and a little balcony, so you can sit out in the evening with a glass of wine and take in the world.

Sounds good? Book quickly, this place is often booked up well in advance!

2.1 Pension Lerner – for a homey touch

A bedroom with a bed in the middle

Located right in the center of Vienna and therefore in the midst of all Vienna’s awesome Christmas markets, this simple accommodation offers huge rooms! Just a few minutes walk from St Stephen’s Cathedral, the location can’t be beat!

Veronica, the owner, is so sweet and really cares about all her guests, and the personal touches make the experience so much better.

PRO TIP: Make sure you have breakfast at Pension Lerner! Their selection is small but there are so many small details, and it’s all hearty, home cooked food. Like being at your grandma’s house!

2.2 Flemings Selection Hotel Wien-City – for great views

View of a hotel room with a bed and a balcony overlooking a city

Located right in the midst of Josefstadt, Vienna, the Flemings Selection Hotel is pretty fancy for a mid-range budget!

Josefstadt is one of my favorite areas in Vienna. It’s so elegant, with its narrow streets and quaint cafés, and really offers an immersive experience in Austrian culture. Perfect for instagram-worthy pics!

They have spa treatments and a sauna, which are fab for those wintry evenings after spending all day at the Christmas markets.

Some of the rooms have incredible views of the city’s rooftops, so I recommend booking a room with a balcony to really enjoy it!

NOTE: Many of the rooms have a bathroom only separated from the main room by a glass wall, so whoever you’re staying with, make sure you’re super comfortable around them!

2.3 25Hours Hotel Beim MuseumsQuartier – for a quirky stay

If you fancy a bathtub right on your balcony, this is the place for you! This hotel is so central you can’t get much closer to all the Christmas market action.

A quirky mix of vintage and modern vibrancy, 25hours Hotel is definitely one of my favorite hotels in Vienna.

The rooms are each super unique, the views from the balconies are exceptional, and I am obsessed with the rooftop bar. In my opinion, EVERY hotel should have a rooftop bar!

A bonus? It’s in the museum district, so if you’re a culture-lover, you’ll fit right in!

PRO TIP: If you want the romantic bathtub on your balcony, get the Extra Large Room!

2.4 Motel One Wien-Staatsoper – for convenience

A bedroom with a tv simulating a fireplace

There is nothing mid-range about this hotel – except the price!

Located right next to the Karlsplatz Underground Station and the Vienna State Opera, the convenience of this hotel (and its elegance) is unbeatable.

This hotel has exceptionally comfy beds. What you see is what you get with Motel One: convenience and comfort at a great price. It’s the best value for money in the city, I guarantee it!

The breakfasts here are divine, especially if you like to eat sweet things and cakes in the morning! Try their pastries, they’re incredible!

2.5 Max Brown Hotel 7th District – for couples

Room with chairs and plants

Ok Christmas market lovers, THIS is my FAVORITE hotel!!

Cool vibes, awesome decor, cozy reading nooks, a cute garden, and a terrace for the occasional evening smooch. PLEASE stay here, right in Vienna’s museum quarter!

Love to play billiards? You can do that here!

I highly recommend this spot, it’s great value for money and isn’t your ordinary hotel – it’s much more special, and the vibes at Christmastime are unbeatable.

2.6 Best mid-range apartment: 7th Heaven

Bedroom with a dark wooden bed and a chandelier

7th Heaven is actual heaven – and a great option for couples who want to stay in a romantic apartment with all the privacy of a local.

This apartment is also a good option if you’re bringing the kids to Vienna for Christmas, as there’s a bedroom with bunk beds as well.

It’s so central that your need for public transport will be practically nothing. Plus, free parking AND no cleaning fee! Yay!

7th Heaven is located on a quiet side street, and there are so many personal touches. The owners will help you out with anything you need, including local tips for the Vienna Christmas markets!

3. Luxury (€250+)

3.1 Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof – for a royal stay

View of the front of a large building with a horse and carriage out front

If you want to feel like royalty, I highly recommend staying at Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof.

Fancy sheets, his and hers sinks, elegant decor, a huge spa, 2 saunas, AND an awesome bar, all located in a vintage building in the heart of Vienna’s central UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Everything you need is just a short walk away – because what is luxury if not utter convenience?

This is the kind of hotel that will leave chocolates on your pillows!

3.2 Boutique Hotel Das Tigra – for excellent service

Did you know that Mozart used to live in part of this hotel’s building? Wild! Walk in Mozart’s musical footsteps and stay in one of Vienna’s most elegant hotels with easy access to the Christmas markets.

The thing I love about this hotel is the breakfast! You’ll savor lots of traditional Viennese classics, and there’s a huge selection. Yum!

Many people who have stayed in this hotel once end up coming back again and again. Myself included! I highly recommend it for the incredible service, attention to detail, and huge suites.

PRO TIP: If you’re in the mood to splurge, you should stay in the Suite – the bathtub is huge!

3.3 Hotel Gilbert – the trendiest hotel in Vienna

A hotel lobby with plants and chairs

Hotel Gilbert is my favorite luxury hotel in Vienna. Located in the trendy 7th district, you’ll get free wine in the evening at this establishment, and the design will make you feel like you’re in LA!

The breakfasts here are excellent, and if you want to feel extra fancy, stay in the Loft Suite! Think: fantastic views across the city, a well-equipped gym, and even a little kitchenette.

For my coffee lovers, there are coffee machines in all the rooms – you don’t even have to leave bed to feel rejuvenated!

3.4 Small Luxury Hotel Altstadt Vienna – for a boutique stay

View of a hotel room with a bed, rug and tv and wooden floors

It’s small, but it’s so elegant. Hotel Altstadt has an incredible location in central Vienna, close enough to all the Christmas markets that you can just walk between them!

Of all the hotels on this list, the rooms here are by far the best – every room has slightly different decor – kind of like independent libraries or art galleries – and the building has a real boutique, palace feel.

Exclusive, luxurious, contemporary – the unusual Hotel Altstadt has everything, including a rooftop terrace with sweeping views of the city. Sigh.

PRO TIP: Need quality restaurants in the area? The hotel receptionists are pros, so ask them for advice!

3.5 Hotel Josefshof am Rathaus – for historic charm

A couple with a suitcase walking down a marble hallway

Hotel Josefshof is a gorgeous place to stay in Vienna, especially if you’re looking for that Christmas charm!

State of the art decor, marble floors, and just steps from the Vienna City Hall, this 4-star luxury hotel is a popular choice for couples.

You’ll get a fluffy dressing gown and excellent dining services while you’re staying here – I highly recommend it if you’re coming to Vienna for Christmas markets, as it’s right smack bang in the middle of the biggest, most glitzy Christmas market in the city!

My personal favorite suite is the Deluxe Vienna Elegance – you’ll feel like royalty, trust me.

3.6 Best luxury apartment: Vienna Residence

A living room with couches, a tv and a balcony

If you’re in Vienna for the Christmas markets and prefer a luxurious, private stay in a huge apartment right in the center of the city, Vienna Residence is the one for you!

A 9 minute walk from Rathausplatz and 3 gorgeous bedrooms, you’ll have more space here than you ever knew you needed.

Imagine yourself relaxing on your own private terrace overlooking a quiet Viennese street in the 9th district – designed as a peaceful haven for city breaks and the perfect spot for your Christmas lights vacation, you may find yourself never wanting to leave the Vienna Residence.
